Self-Boarding Threatens Girls' Education in Ntcheu District*

At least eight girls at Ntonda Community Day Secondary School in Ntcheu District, Central Region of Malawi, have dropped out of school due to challenges associated with self-boarding, highlighting a growing threat to girls’ education in rural Malawi. The school’s headteacher, Precious Fandika, says self-boarding,where learners rent accommodation near school without supervision,has exposed many girls to financial hardship, exploitation, early marriage, and teenage pregnancy. According to Fandika, most of the affected learners come from villages located 10 to 12 kilometres away from the school, forcing them to opt for self-boarding as daily commuting is impossible. “Self-boarding is a serious threat to girls’ education here in Ntcheu. Because of financial pressure, some girls end up engaging in sexual relationships to survive. Others get married or become pregnant,” said Fandika.
